The profession of architects is increasingly occupying a key position in the development programs of all the advanced countries. However in India it has yet to play a much bigger role than the present one. The number of schools / institutions offering B. Arch course have increased every year with their intake and presently grown to over 135. Also the quality of education is being governed / maintained by Council of Architecture / A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi. Still many things, besides aptitude test, are required to be done in Architecture education itself for coming at par with the advanced countries in the profession. Admission to the first year of B. Arch. Course in all schools / institutions was made compulsory through aptitude test by Council of Architecture with model syllabus and pattern of the test. Since then aptitude test was conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi in the form of A.I.E.E.E. and by some State Boards in the form of State P.E.T. Now Council of Architecture through its academic unit (National Institute of Advanced Studies in Architecture) at Pune has also started conducting the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA).
