Summary: The past decade has seen an unprecedented accumulation of knowledge concerning ecology and environment, unfortunately, the very mass of the information explosion has created problems for those concerned with disseminating the material. School, college and university courses, initially structured to meet the growing demand for environmental awareness has become an uphill struggle for teachers and students alike, teachers, instructors, lecturer and professors invariably specialists in any one of the number of disciplines have to garner information from journals quite remote from their own fields. This is really a time consuming job and is likely to be avoided by everyone. Even after relevant information is gathered, the rational organisation of the material has become a logistic problem. The primary goal of preparing these volumes is to present a balanced view of the diversity of issues that relate to the environment and to provide the fundamental information that will allow students to understand the complexities of those issues. The other goal for preparing these volumes is to focus on underlying principles and the exciting advances in understanding that have characterized the last decade of environmental science. This approach will help each student establish a base of general knowledge about environmental issues from which rational, educated political choices and opinions can be fashioned independently. This set of encyclopaedia will be most useful not only for the students and researchers at post graduates as well as doctoral levels but also for the regulatory, promotional, planning and entrepreneurial bodies dealing with environmental protection and pollution control in cement, leather, sugar, textile, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, steel and mining industries.
